Funny Games

I decided to check into this German film after hearing a few members on my message board talking about it. I found it to be a pretty strange, but interesting and original film. I've always been partial to films involving regular families or friends being held captive by strange people out in the country or the middle-of-nowhere. Would explain why Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of my favorite horror films.

The movie is about a husband, wife, and kid, going to a house during vacation and two strange men approach them at their home and end up holding them captive. The men play mind games with the family and eventually torture them. The movies has a lot of very strange moments, like having the guys in the film look directly at the camera and acknowledge the audience. Also a scene towards the end involving a remote control and rewinding

Other than the weird stuff, it has a pretty good and original story. The acting and directing is well done, though, I thought some of what the family did or should have done was rather stupid. Since the movie had a lot of weird stuff, it was hard to predict what was going to happen next. I guess that's another reason why I enjoyed it.Some of what I didn't like was how some scenes would just seem to drag on longer than they should. I found myself sitting their wondering when something was going to happen. Not much for gore or anything. It's mainly more of a talking and performance-driven movie. I figured a 7-rating was best.

OVERALL

A good and original film. It's unpredictable and has a lot of strange scenes, which makes the movie a good watch for something out of the ordinary.

Funny Games is a great American take on Haneke's on 97 film. Naomi Watts, Tim Roth, and Michael Pitt help the film appeal to a broader audience. There's a pretty cool interactive site...http://wip.warnerbros.com/funnygames/
They also have a site with a phone game you can play where the killers from the movie will call your friends and say creepy stuff, its coolio http://funnygames.varitalk.com/
