I honestly thought I'd like this movie more than I did. I figured I'd at least give it a 7-rating, but after viewing it I realized I had the wrong impression. The biggest problem this movie has is the script, which makes the film seem like it has an identity crises. It seems to want to be so many different movies together, as though they wrote the script as they were filming. The story basically follows Halle Berry's character as a psychiatrist, who works at an insane asylum. She goes home one night at meets a strange woman in the middle of the road. The next thing you know it, she awakens within' one of the cells in the asylum, with absolutely no recollection of what happened prior to that moment. Eventually things start coming back to her and pieces start fitting together to reveal something far sinister than she had imagined.

The movie starts out pretty good with Halle waking up in the asylum. At first I thought the movie would have a lot of good solid twists and stuff revealing why she was really in the asylum, but it seems like as the film went on the story just got dumber, or at least less complicated. In the end I just felt as though I've seen the movie before countless times. Aside from the weak story, the performances by Halle and Robert Downy Jr. were well done. Penélope Cruz had a smaller role in the movie than I thought she would. It was pretty much all about Halle, but it's not like I'm complaining or anything. I was expecting more scares or creepiness, but I never received any. Judging from the trailer it looked like it would have some good scares, but that wasn't the case. At times it seemed like it was goin' for a good scare, but it somehow just falls apart in the end. I guess maybe it was the way they were performed.

I guess in the end I was expecting a little too much from this and that's why I decided to give it a 6-rating. It could have been a lot better had the script been worked more; at least this time Dark Castle tried to be more original than putting out another lame remake. It was worth a try.

OVERALL

A decent film, but nothing original or special. Starts off good, but as the film goes on the story gets less and less complicated and tries to me too many films at once. Check this film if you want, but don't expect anything too good.
