Grizzly Park
It's easy to dismiss a killer-animal flick now-a-days, considering the genre really hasn't seen many good films. However, that didn't stop first-time writer/director Tom Skull from giving us one anyway. In the time where remakes and copycats run amok, a little film called Grizzly Park made its way into the genre. The film attempts to bring back the old camp and cheese genre efforts we saw mostly from the 80s.
So the story follows an eccentric group of young miscreants, who are forced to attend a new rehabilitation program in the wilderness. Little do they know, a killer has escaped the local prison and has disguised himself as the officer in charge of their well-being. Of course, this killer isn't the antagonist in this story. No, the villain in this flick is a take-no-prisoners grizzly, who just so happens to have an unnerving taste for human flesh. Led by good ol' "Ranger Bob" (Glenn Morshower), the group finds themselves not only fending off the insects, but also the said-grizzly.
I really liked how the flick started off with the impression that this escaped killer would be the one that our group fends against in the woods. This is an obvious reference to the countless slashers from the 80's that had some escaped maniac from an asylum or prison kill the standard group of young horny teens. I also liked the fact that they chose to use a real bear as opposed to some asshole in a bear suit. While watching the flick you really get a burning hatred for these characters, since none of them are likable, making their deaths all the sweeter.
Actor Glenn Morshower stole the show in all the scenes he was in as Ranger Bob, and for a first-time filmmaker, Tom Skull did a pretty good job, and even makes some more seasoned directors look like amateurs. There's a fair amount of blood and gore, and with some of the light comedy thrown in, you've got a cheesy, but decent killer-animal feature. My only real gripe about the flick would have to be the ending, which seemed to come out of nowhere and didn't really blend well with the rest of the movie, but otherwise, it was fine.
OVERALL
One of the better killer-animal flicks that also plays homage to old school slashers from the 80's. The film offers lots of deaths, decent gore, and a badass killer bear. Worth a check.
