Half Light

No, Demi Moore's latest film isn't a big-budgeted theatrical effort; well, not in the US anyway. Instead, she's the star of a small little thriller/romance called Half Light. When I first posted about this project on UHM it was thought to lean towards the horror genre considering it's supposed to have some supernatural elements. After viewing the film, I've concluded that this is far from being a horror film, but it is a good story-driven romance with some thrilling aspects and beautiful cinematography.

The film follows Demi Moore's character, whose an accomplished writer that (after losing her son in a drown accident) moves to a relatively secluded Scottish beach home, with a nearby lighthouse being her only neighbor. That is until she visits the island that houses the lighthouse and meets a nice man, whom seems to be the only person that can take her mind off her deceased son and failed marriage. Everything seems perfect until she begins to question her sanity when more details behind this mysterious man are revealed.

To my surprise I actually liked this flick. The story is slow, but detailed, and also has its number of twists towards the end that kept me guessing. The first half is pretty much like a plot-building romance flick, until about half-way, when more is revealed, turning the movie into more of a suspense-thriller. This is where I suppose the "horror" kicks into gear, although don't expect scares or anything of the sort. The supernatural element is still apparent in the movie, although it's not heavily involved in the ghost-theme, but it still succeeds in being an overall good watch thanks to the directing, acting, and interesting story.

OVERALL

Don't expect off-the-wall scares, or a lot of ghost action here. This is more of a romance-thriller than anything, although the supernatural element is still there, it's not necessarily a horror film. Check this if you're looking for a moody flick with a solid story, cast, and directing.

It's really quite an interesting little film that should have gotten better press than it did. For anyoen who wants a break from the stereotypically crappy horror films that populate the mainstream market then I would give this a try even though it isn't really a full blown horror film.
