Halloween

Many people have asked me in the past why I don't have reviews up for the Halloween, F13 or the Nightmare on Elm Street films and my reply is always the same - why review a movie that everyone has already seen? - Plus I don't normally review movies that I've seen countless times anyway. Halloween is a movie that every horror fan knows of and has most likely already seen. It's like a movie you'd HAVE to watch to consider yourself a horror fan, but then again, needing to watch something in order to consider yourself a horror fan is rather silly, but I digress.

I've never owned this film aside from an old cheap VHS I had many years ago, so when I finally got this baby on DVD I just had to write up a review. I figured it was about time that I wrote one anyway, because I knew eventually I'd get around to it. I'm sure many will agree with me that this is one of the best horror movies ever made. The film accomplishes in scaring the audience without the overuse of gore or pop-up scares. I’d consider it to be the definitive slasher film; the movie that pretty much started them all. It's funny that Halloween was originally going to be a sequel to Black Christmas, but that didn't work out and director John Carpenter ended up doing his own thing, which is what we see here.

The movie is directed excellently by John Carpenter (one of my fav directors). John manages to put the audience in Michael's point-of-view, which was pretty new at the time, and also put the audience in the victim's predicament. Doing that succeeds in creating a lot of tension and fear for the viewer. Although by today's standards it's not as effective for the modern horror fan. I saw this movie when I was a lot younger, and even then I never got scared, but seeing it now I can see how it can can scare some people. The creepiness of "the shape" just standing there in the white mask can creep anyone out. Not knowing he's standing behind the person until it's too late. Good stuff.

Who knew that Captain Kirk's face would end up scaring the hell out of people. It's amazing that this little indie film by some up-and-coming director would end up being on of the highest grossing independent movies ever made. The performances by a young Jamie Lee and veteran actor Donald Pleasance were both excellent. Even the performance by Carrie star P.J. Soles was pulled off well. Jamie Lee is another example of big stars first starting out in a horror film. It's interesting that John Carpenter originally wanted Peter Cushing to play Dr. Loomis, but he turned it down, then he wanted Christopher Lee, who also turned it down. I think it wouldn't have been the same movie with either of the two.

Another great thing that makes this movie so memorable is its excellent score done by Carpenter himself. Who can get that infamous Halloween tune out of their head? I know I can't. I'm not quite sure if the first time I saw this movie was on TV or not, but I know if you watch this on television it'll have some extra footage thrown in. Apparently when they were first premiering it on TV, the network wanted them to make it a little longer to air, because it was a couple minutes too short, so John Carpenter filmed a few short scenes just for that. If you haven't seen the extra footage you can read about it here.

After watching this movie over I realized that we really don't get to see a full shot of Michael wearing his mask until the last 20 minutes of the film. Aside from that all we really see are shots from a distance or parts of the mask by looking from a different angle. That's another reason that makes the movie "scary" for the audience. The fact that you can't see what or who it is makes things a lot creepier. Too bad Hollywood now-a-days still hasn't picked up on that. Another thing I noticed is that Michael sure likes to stalk people. That mofo basically stalked Laurie through the whole movie. In a way he almost seems like a perv, but we all know he just wanted to kill her and nothing more.

This is obviously one of my favorite horror movies, along with Michael Myers being one of my favorite horror icons. The film is close to being perfect, but being my picky self, gave it a 9-rating instead. Why? I guess if there was a little more action then I would have given it a 10, but I honestly think it's fine the way it is. I love this movie.

OVERALL

The slasher film that started it all. Inspired by the works of the late-great Alfred Hitchcock, John Carpenter manages to scare the audience without the overuse of gore or pop-up scares. No, he gets the audience by simply using a character, whom we barely see, and show just how evil he really is. One of the best horror films ever made. It's hard to not see this movie, (considering it's aired on television at least once a year) but if for some reason you haven't seen this yet... *slap*... See it now!

I agree about the Halloween score. It's my ringtone and it still scares my sister when it rings. I heard that Donald Pleasance wasn't gonna do the film either but, his kids talked him into it because they were Carpenter fans. Thanx kids!! They pulled off an epic movie on a non existant budget!! This was definitly the one that pioneered slasher. Good thing it wasn't a sequel to Black Christmas. The Horror!! MMFWCL

I saw Halloween as a very young child and I didnt think it was scary at all. In my opinion very overrated I think Rob Zombies version was much better anyway I have been a fan of Nightmare on Elm Street those in my opinion were much better and much more scary Mr. Craven is the true horror wizard right below Clive Barker

This is by far one of the classic horror films that has cemented itself into the horror hall of fame. Very original and way ahead of its time. Who would have thought spray painting a William Shatner mask all white and giving a guy a jumpsuit would end up being as chilling as it turned out. This is the standard that many directors have fallen so short of. Whats most amazing is, it's not packe dwith CGI or massive stunts and special effects, it was a simple concept that was executed masterfully. I love this movie and pray that horror movies will once again someday hold the merit of great films like this one with original ideas and scripts and good acting. Until that day, we'll have to revisist the past for truly awesome and well put together scares.

John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN is easily in the top 3 of the greatest horror films ever made. That movie jumpstarted the slasher horror genre of the 80's. Yes, I'm aware of the amazing PSYCHO, the grandaddy of them all, TEXAS CHAINSAW and BLACK CHRISTMAS. But HALLOWEEN changed it all. There is no Jason or Freddy without HALLOWEEN . Michael Myer's is king.

Even Jason is a wannaabe Michael, I think the Friday the 13rd movies are great, but of course we can't compare it with Halloween. Halloween is such a great movie that still scares the hell of anyone who sees it (not the remake obiously).
What John Carpenter did was something great. A simple & story and a low budget but with such scary n clever elements that makes this movie still so good and terryfing (the mask, the music, Dr Loomi's speahces about evil, the scences of The Shadow staking Laurie and her friends.
Definitively there's no movie to compare, Halloween rules in terms of slashers movies.

What theSlamm said has to be one of the most idiotic things I've read in a long time. Anyone with half a brain would know that Jason is a Myers wannabe and was created to cash in on the success of Halloween, and calling him the "first" is almost insulting.

Dude Slamm, is that some sort of taste-less joke? It sounds as if you are confident in being a 'real horror fan' which is respectable. But Halloween and Michael Myers had your precious Friday the 13th/Jason beat by a good 2-4 yrs. 'Real horror fans' know Halloween was a product of '78. When was F13th? '80? '81? Everyone has a different opinion on who was the 'best,' and that's awesome, but dates are not opinions; they are facts. Now for my opinion: John Carpenter's Halloween is the greatest horror movie ever made and one that literally thousands have either imitated as a whole or piece by piece.

I aboslutely love Halloween. This movie is responsible for my love for horror movies and the entire month of October. As a kid I used to count the months till October so I could "really" watch halloween. The remake, however, is atrocious as far as I am concerned. I was really looking forward to Zombie's take but he ruined his chance. He turned Michael Myers, who is a brilliant character, into a hulking beast that was nothing more than a WWF clone turned mass murderer. And what the hell was up with the masks? Were talking about pure evil here man, pure evil doesn't make paper mache masks.

I can't wait for the 30th anniversary 6 dvd boxset, it's gonna cost a *** load but it'll be worth it but living in the U.K it'll probably get released in a couple of years time.

i agree this is the best horror movie of all time. the premise is simple, the directing is brilliant, and the score i think is the scariest part of the movie. it reachs you on a core level, who's not scared of the boogeyman! a must see for all horror fans. it still holds it's impact after all these years and way to many awful sequels. you can copy it but you can't touch it!

I think the best part about the halloween movies in general is that they blended the ominous "someones in the backround or off in the distance and you don't know they're there" AND the good deaths and chase scenes. I may get shot for saying this but as much as respect the original for the amazingness that it is its not my favorite of the series. I actually really enjoyed Halloween H20. I thought it was extremely well put together and was an excellent come back for Jamie Lee Curtis in the series. I didn't think the remake was bad. I actually liked how Rob Zombie connected it and explained the unexplained about the series. I will admit the prequal did drag on longer than it should've but I do believe it was done for a good reason so that by the time you got to the remake it was actually really good. And oh yeah... no sequal. Micheal's dead. Don't be stupid.
