Hellraiser: Deader

After the fourth film Hellraiser: Bloodline was released in theaters direct-to-video sequels were made that went in a different direction; Different as in very little Pinhead. The movies went more towards the 'what's real and what isn't' take; playing with the viewers minds and attempting to keep us guessing. While the first Hellraiser wasn't so much about Pinhead and more about the Cenobites, the sequels thereafter focused a little more and more on the main man himself, Pinhead. I liked the turn. Focusing more on a very cool horror icon was just the right edge-up, although it left the plots lacking. When part five came about on video, fans were left scratching their heads, wondering why Pinhead's face was on the cover, when he was only in the film for a couple minutes. It was clear the director was aiming for something new, but instead got a lot of negative feedback from fans. I personally thought the DTV sequels were decent. They proved to be interesting and somewhat original.

Now we're introduced to another new sequel with the same kind of 'what's real' theme to it. I have to say that I'm not impressed. The series had two previous sequels that played that route and having another one just doesn't do it for me. I'm just tired of guessing whether what's happening is real or not. Kari Wuhrer stars as a reporter who's sent to Romania for the origins behind a mysterious tape that shows a man seemingly resurrecting a woman after she commits suicide. Apparently the man is the leader of a group known as the "Deaders". As Kari gets deeper into the Goth underworld, she gets closer to the Deaders, but simultaneously getting closer to her own insanity, leading to her questioning whether the images of violence she sees is really happening or if it's the Cenobites playing some kind of mean trick on her; Those pesky Cenobites; always causing mischief.

I have to admit that the movie really struck my interest from the start. The plot hooked me immediately and I was impressed by the quality behind the film. Though, half-way through the film we're thrown into a maze of a plot, when star Kari Wuhrer begins questioning reality from fantasy. Pinhead has a slightly bigger role than he did ioning reality from fantasy. Pinhead has a slightly bigger role than he did in the previous films, which is a big improvement in my opinion. Expect to catch another DTV sequel in September.

OVERALL

The movie starts off pretty good, but loses itself half-way. The 'what's real?' theme has been played out with this series. Watch at your own risk.
