Benjamin Cook After tackling a few Saw sequels, Repo! The Genetic Opera and the Mother's Day remake, writer/director Darren Lynn Bousman now attempts to make his mark in the religious horror sub-genre with 11-11-11, a film loosely based on the 11-11 phenomenon, which many believe to be linked to key events in history and others a sign of mystical powers or a supernatural presence. I wanted to like this film as it offers an interesting storyline and seemed to have potential in this sea of unoriginal genre projects, but it just failed to deliver in many aspects, and those familiar with similarly-themed efforts will find its climax to be incredibly predictable. The story focuses on Joseph Crone, a writer who recently lost his wife and child after one of his crazed fans sets fire to his home. As if matters couldn't get any worse, Joseph gets into a car wreck, but despite his suicidal urges to end his own existence, somehow makes it out with barely a scratch. Immediately following the accident, he receives a call from Spain about his dying father, compelling the writer to make a trip out there in hopes of seeing the man before his passing. ... read more

Penpak Sirikul This is an overlooked Thai film that I didn't realize was worth a damn until recently when news of its sequel broke out. After reading several positive comments on the first film, I decided to finally give it a look. To my surprise, this turned out to be a good movie -- it's creative and interesting from start to finish. Also known as 13 Beloved, the film follows a broke and down-on-his-luck guy, who receives a mysterious phone call from some sort of game show that says if he kills a fly he will win money. He immediately dismisses such an appalling idea, until the person on the other line reveals information about him that no one else would know. He kills the fly and receives a notification on his phone that money has just been deposited into his account. ... read more

Tony Shalhoub Based on a Stephen King segment in his audio book entitled Blood and Smoke, which was later re-released in written format as part of his Everything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales compilation, the eventual film was optioned by Dimension Films in '03 and of course, them being slow with almost every project they sink their fingers into, filming didn't actually begin until the Summer of '06, after the cast was set and Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy) was replaced by Mary McCormack, when it was revealed to conflict with her shooting schedule for her role in the hit ABC series. The film opened to theaters on June 22nd '07 to high numbers, and making it King's best theatrical debut since 2004's Secret Window (opening at a couple million less). Some say this is his best story-to-film adaptation from a novel since The Shining, and although I don't specifically agree with that comment, it surely is one of his better transformations from book-to-film. ... read more

Some fans thought that since this was titled "2001 Maniacs" that it was a sequel to the first film, but if that were the case it would have to be set in 2065. Of course writer/director Tim Sullivan wasn't going to go that route, but instead bring forth a "re-imagining" of the original, promising more of the same gore and campiness that the original offered. Of course, I've never seen the H.G. Lewis adaptation, but from what I've heard it sounded like a gore-filled ride!, much like the tradition of H.G. films, being the "Godfather of Gore" and all. ... read more

Andrea Leon Tim Sullivan's sequel to the surprisingly entertaining 2001 Maniacs is finally here after being in development for a few years. Tim had problems finding the right funding for the film, which after seeing the movie, I can see why. While the first was a fun gore-filled ride, with lots of quirky characters and humor, its sequel is nothing more than a low-budget softcore wannabe splatter flick. ... read more

The plot obviously isn't too original, but it's still good. It's pretty much about a new virus that breaks out in London and in a matter of weeks the city is forced to evacuate. 28 days after the virus breaks out a man named Jim awakens to find himself in a hospital room. He roams around the city to find that there is no one in sight. He learns from reading newspapers that the city had to evacuate because of a virus. ... read more

This movie is part of the Yukihiko Tsutsumi and Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) team-up with their Duel-Films company that was originally just a small idea amongst colleagues that turned into reality after a few meetings together. The two talented directors had an idea to make their own film that basically shows nothing more than specific characters dueling it out. Ryuhei Kitamura came out with Aragami while Yukihiko came out with 2LDK, which essentially has only two people in the entire film, with the exception of another character who's only a supporting role that's shown in certain flash sequences. ... read more

Also known as Whispering Corridors 5, the film has no connection to the previous installments aside from the fact that they all revolve around a ghost in an all girl's school. In this movie the story revolves around a group of girls, whom decide to get together one night and perform a suicide pact, where they would all jump off the school's roof together. Naturally only one of the students actually goes through with it, leaving the rest having to deal with the dead girl's pesky ghost. ... read more
