Monster Man

I had never heard of this film until Lion's Gate decided to send me a copy out of nowhere. I couldn't even find much information on it at IMDB, so I went in checkin' this film with knowing absolutely nothing about it. I'm glad I did, because I found it to be a fairly enjoyable low-budget flick. The story is obviously nothing original, being about a couple guys driving across-country to visit an old chick friend in hopes of confessing their true feelings to her before she gets married. While on the road they get into a little trouble with a crazy impatient monster-truck driver, who runs them off the road. They stop at a local gas station later on, only to meet up with the trucker again. They decide to get a little revenge by pissing inside the truck while he's in the restroom, and the cat-and-mouse game begins!

The movie borrows from other films like Jeepers Creepers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Joyride. It's nothing original and the story is pretty silly, especially when more is revealed at the end, but I still enjoyed it none-the-less and I thought it had a nice amount of blood and gore considering its low-budget and the fact that it's going direct-to-video. The movie doesn't take itself seriously, which is a good thing, because with a story like this, you'd have to.

Although the character played by Justin Urich is annoying most of the time, he does have his funny moments and offers the film its comedy relief. Eric Jungmann did a good job as the dorky virgin that wore a lot of ridiculous Velcro. I thought the monster truck that was used the run the guys off the road was a pretty cool vehicle. It reminded me of the vehicle the Creeper used from Jeepers Creepers, but only more "buff." I thought the stitched freak that was operating the vehicle was an interesting character that could have horror icon potential. That is, of course, if you look past his similarities to Leatherface. In the end I enjoyed the movie. It had a nice easy-going atmosphere and interesting characters. Despite it's silly story and sometimes even dialogue, I decided to give it a 6-rating. I enjoyed its cheesy gore and I'm partial to road trip horror movies like this.

OVERALL

Nothing original, but a decent watch none-the-less. Has a good amount of cheesy blood and gore, and a cool monster truck to boot. Recommended for those not looking for anything special and an easy-going horror flick that'll keep you entertained.

The relationship between our two heros was funny. The truck was cool. Good gore at the end. Fun little movie. Much better then the witless, humorless, and derivative stuff like Detour or Rest Stop.

I liked this movie as well. It was well done and the comedy in it is humorous and not forced. While the story wasn't that original the characters are great. Definitely worth a watch for those into horror comedy.
