Near Dark

I first saw this film when I was a kid, but I decided to revisit it due to its recent release on DVD. I don't normally review movies I've already seen, but sometimes there are exceptions when I haven't seen a movie for a long time. I remember liking this when I first saw it and I still like it when I see it now. It's one of those underrated vampire flicks that is getting more notice because of its DVD release although many horror fans have seen and known about it long before.

The story is about a farm boy who meets a girl and ends up getting bitten and brought into the "group," which consisted of four other unique vampires. What makes this vamp flick so different from the others has to be the fact that they don't really have the same characteristics as other vamp flicks. They are never shown with fangs and they seem just like crazy people rather than vampires. Back then all vamp movies where pretty much the same.

Ironically this movie came out the same time as another famous vampire movie with a similar theme - The Lost Boys. Near Dark didn't make much money at the box office at the start and ending up circulating from one place to another and did very well on video. Another factor that makes this film unique is the fact that it's directed by a female and we rarely see females direct movies, let-alone a horror film. The cast in this movie is great - half consisting of the people from the film Aliens - Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein.

The directing is well done and it has a good atmosphere throughout. I liked the western-like feel to the movie and the violence was just right. A somewhat recent movie tried to duplicate this by having the whole no-fangs deal, but it pretty much failed to capture what Near Dark brought us. I would have given this movie a higher-rating, but due to the fact that it doesn't have as much going on as I'd like, I had to give it a 7, but it's a positive review either way, so it doesn't matter.

OVERALL

One of my favorite vampire movie. Unique, well directed, great cast, unique story, check this film out.

Just re-release the original in theatres. There is a novel idea "Duh" you hollywood execs! It worked for Blade Runner Twice! Remaster it ,do a directors cut and voila a hit... again.

I honestly detest this sequel all the way. I love the original, its practically my favorite movie. The actors in the original were great, especially Bill Paxton. I don't know if I want to see the original but will probably end up doing it anyways..just to see if it bombs like the rest of the remakes. You just can't beat the original and there is nothing really wrong with the original, maybe they could have added a little more story to it but there really is no reason to change it. I think these directors have gone overboard on trying to remake their originals..like Hellraise(why hellraiser), Nightmare on Elm Street(how can you remake that one to be honest 0_o) and Friday the 13th..well..maybe that one, but you get what I am persuing at. Like Bruce Campbell said in his 15 min segment on..spike I think. Whats the point in remaking originals..if you fuck up, you fuck up..theres no need to change something that was bad to begin with but persue your career on and try to become more efficent with film making. Or something like that...but you get what I am saying.
