Near Dark

I first saw this film when I was a kid, but I decided to revisit it due to its recent release on DVD. I don't normally review movies I've already seen, but sometimes there are exceptions when I haven't seen a movie for a long time. I remember liking this when I first saw it and I still like it when I see it now. It's one of those underrated vampire flicks that is getting more notice because of its DVD release although many horror fans have seen and known about it long before.

The story is about a farm boy who meets a girl and ends up getting bitten and brought into the "group," which consisted of four other unique vampires. What makes this vamp flick so different from the others has to be the fact that they don't really have the same characteristics as other vamp flicks. They are never shown with fangs and they seem just like crazy people rather than vampires. Back then all vamp movies where pretty much the same.

Ironically this movie came out the same time as another famous vampire movie with a similar theme - The Lost Boys. Near Dark didn't make much money at the box office at the start and ending up circulating from one place to another and did very well on video. Another factor that makes this film unique is the fact that it's directed by a female and we rarely see females direct movies, let-alone a horror film. The cast in this movie is great - half consisting of the people from the film Aliens - Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein.

The directing is well done and it has a good atmosphere throughout. I liked the western-like feel to the movie and the violence was just right. A somewhat recent movie tried to duplicate this by having the whole no-fangs deal, but it pretty much failed to capture what Near Dark brought us. I would have given this movie a higher-rating, but due to the fact that it doesn't have as much going on as I'd like, I had to give it a 7, but it's a positive review either way, so it doesn't matter.

OVERALL

One of my favorite vampire movie. Unique, well directed, great cast, unique story, check this film out.

How insulting--I wasn't aware that Near Dark and Twilight were similar. Thank goodness it's been put on hold.
Reading the "remakes" page at this site--it's amazing how many great movies are in need of "re-do's" just so the simple-minded can follow the story. Rent the originals, then ask someone who knows to explain it to you, if you can't figure it out on your own.

These idiots need to be stopped. Seriously, i thought i'd become dulled due to the fact that bothering to get angry about great films being bastardised by soulless remakes is now like trying to catch a tidal wave with a tennis racket, but this is a bridge too far. Didn't they learn anything from remaking the Hitcher? Another Eric Red classic given the music video hack treatment that missed the point completely. Like so many classic horror films (Suspiria for one, and don't even get me started on that) Near Dark was lightning in a bottle, similar things have been tried a million times and haven't come close due to the fact that every facet of it is so spot on that it would be impossible to reproduce. By far the worst thing for me is that i just don't see the benefit in any of this, there's no target audience for this kind of thing right now (Unless they're planning on turning it into Twilight? An act which will surely bring about the apocalypse) and it's hardly like the original is a well enough known film to make it worth trying to trade on its title alone. Just leave it be, for the love of god. Would it help if i say please?
