| Open Water I had mixed feelings about this movie when I first heard about it. Apparently Lion's Gate bought the $130,000 dollar film for $2.5 million, so they had to really like it, and it was obvious that they attempted to make this out to be the next Jaws just because it deals with some sharks. Though, let’s not go thinking that the sharks play a major role in the film. No, the main dilemma is not the couple stranded in the ocean with sharks, but the couple stranded in the ocean period. The sharks are just a minor addition to the story. We really don't see a lot of shark action until towards the end. The rest of the movie is essentially the couple bickering and trying to figure a way out of their mess. Add some jelly fish, little biting fish, and some shark fin action and we've got all the "action" in Open Water. Don't get me wrong, the movie isn't entirely bad. It is a decent effort for its budget and I admire how they managed to create a lot of buzz around it, but when it all comes down to it the movie isn't anything more than pure hype. I'm glad I wasn't sucked into the all the hype that Lion's Gate dished out, because I know I would have been very disappointed, like I'm sure many were. There are quite a few problems with the film aside from the lack of action, like for instance some scenes that fail to explain things fully, where we'll have one thing going on and something different the next minute. I'd have to blame the editing for that. Also, don't think that since this movie has an R-rating that it'd be violent. Nah, it only has that rating because of the full-frontal the lead chick delivers and for the numerous times the "F" word was uttered. So what exactly is the story? Well it's simply just about a couple that take a vacation to the Bahamas and eventually go on a group scuba diving session. They stay in the water slightly longer than they were supposed to, and thanks to the ignorance of the crew, they are left behind in the middle of the ocean. Of course at first they think they're just lost, but a couple hours later prove that they were definitely left behind. Now they have to attempt to find help and survive the dangers of the ocean. Ooohhh, what will they do??? I wasn't quite sure what rating to give the movie. I was originally thinking a possible 5-rating, but then I had to think back and admire the filmmaker's effort and how they managed to make a small film into something big with so much hype. I haven't seen this much hype over a low-budget flick since The Blair Witch Project. In the end I decided a 6-rating was best. The movie is very slow and boring, but at least it's something different. OVERALL Comments Page 1 of 1:
I don't think of this as a horror movie at all except for the fact that the couple is in a horrible predicament. I think this is more of a character study of a couple so wrapped up in thier own crap that they lose connection with the rest of the world to the point that they become as insignificant as fish food. They get left behind because no one notices or remembers them. I think a 6 is a fair rating, but this isn't really a horror movie. It's a drama. I wouldn't recommend it to horror fans, just people who like character driven movies with subtle nuances. Don't look to be excited, just a little creeped out imagining if this happened to you. Some people get it, some don't. I did. I liked it.
THis is the worst horror movie ever in my opinion. Worse than S.I.C.K., The Item, Demon Child 666, The Grudge, The Wicker Man, all of them. This movie was so boring I couldn't fall asleep during it! All it is is two people floating in the water what seems like decades before the credits role. The only good part about this movie was the ending. 0/10
