Rawhead Rex
I saw this movie many years ago, but I've since forgotten about it until
recently when Germany released a special "X-Rated" edition of
the film, which includes two bonus scenes and an alternate scene, which
I thought was pretty damn cool.
Although it's supposed to be uncut, I did't notice much difference in
terms of gore, but then again, I haven't seen the film in a while. The
movie is based on a short story from Clive Barker (Hellraiser, Candyman), who also wrote the script. You'd expect a better script
to come out of Clive, but I don't blame him since I'm sure a lot of gore
had to be trimmed for the film. From what I've read, the movie stays pretty
much the same to the story, except more toned down with the gore-factor.
The
premise is about an ancient demon that's released from its tomb and wreaks
havoc in a small town in Ireland. The movie mainly focuses on a family
man, who's in Ireland in search for information and pics on old churches
and such. The man is seemingly the only survivor whos seen the demon,
and attempts to make a report with the local police, but of course they
refuse to believe him. That is until more and more cases of a "monster"
sighted turn up, but by then the man loses his child to the demon, and
is set on an unstoppable rage to be rid of the demon once and for all.
The
movie really isn't all that bad. It's entertaining and the demon, Rawhead,
is fairly cool. Although the movie manages to be entertaining, you can't
ignore the cheesy story and especially cheesy and far-out ending. I remember
when I first saw the ending I sighed and rolled my eyes. If you look past
the cheese quality, and just watch it as it is -- a simple monster movie
-- then you'll probably be entertained, as I was. In the end it's a decent
flick, but you'll most likely be more entertained by Clive's short story
than the movie itself. It's just sad a lot of the gore and violence was
removed.
OVERALL
A
decent 80's monster flick, but could've used more gore or at least a better
plot. Either way, worth a check if you've got nothing else to watch, but
I'd recommend the short story than the movie.
