The Beyond

Finally I get a chance to see a classic film. I've been hearing lots of positive buzz about this film for years, and so when I saw the DVD at a local video store I had to buy it. It starts off interesting enough with a mob killing a warlock and talks about a hotel being the seventh gateway to hell. The film never really drags. It's pretty much interesting from start to finish. Some parts may be a little bit confusing and that's why you gotta pay real close attention to everything that happens.

Director, Lucio Fulci is known as the "godfather of gore" and with good reason, considering all his films had a lot of gore. He really lays the blood thick in this film. There were some excellent gore scenes, like one where this guy gets his eyeball ripped out from the side and where a girl gets her head blown off. The thing that kinda disappointed me was the fact that the zombies really don't show until the last 30 minutes of the film and the film really doesn't begin to pick up until the last 15 minutes, and that kinda sucks, considering the film is only 89 minutes. The acting wasn't bad and the lighting was good and that made me happy because the last film I saw of Lucio's (The Gates of Hell) had very bad lighting. The ending is a bit confusing and it really makes you think, which I'm sure is what Lucio wanted the audience to do. If the film was a bit longer, explained a little more, and had more zombies, I probably would have liked it more.

OVERALL

It's a good film to watch if you're into gore and a fan of Itallian director, Lucio Fulci. If you're wanting to see an all out zombie film, then I suggest you rent something like Dawn of the Dead.

One of the better Fulci films, right behind Zombie and City of the Living Dead. The House by the Cemetary was pretty good also..

This movie was put on a pedestal so high that when I saw it, I just couldn't reach it. In other words, my friend built "The Beyond" up so much that when I saw it, I was expecting perfection. I did not get it. The movie is infact awesome, it's just not as godly as some people say it is. But, I may just be bitter due to the Necrophasia mucis video that was on the DVD. God they suck! Phil Anselmo shouldn't play guitar... 6/10

this film was pretty good although i think more gore and more shots of the redhaired gilr posessed would have done a better job.
