| The Dark Ginger Snaps director John Fawcett returns after his TV-directing stint to bring us another horror installment. Sadly, this is neither as creative nor fun as Ginger Snaps. In this movie we follow a young mother and daughter couple as they visit the father in a remote island location. The daughter dies after an accidental drowning and a mysterious young girl appears shortly after that has an odd resemblance to the deceased girl. It's soon revealed that their location houses an old legend where the dead can return to life by sacrificing another life. It's also said that one could go to the "other side" in hopes of retrieving someone dead. This proves to be the premise of The Dark, a film that uses an all too familiar theme of a child returning from the grave and mixing it with an old legend and supernatural elements. The movie has very little scares and the ones it does have aren't executed well, thus, ends up just as a waste of time. I admit that the film does have an interesting turn towards the end, which makes the dull and predictable storyline a little more interesting. Also, the cast is fairly good (namely Sean Bean), and the budget is in the millions, in the end the film couldn't avoid the dreaded straight-to-DVD treatment. Having seen the movie, I can see why it's not going to theaters. They try to deliver the chills and scares, with an attempt at giving the audience a creative look around an old legend, but sadly, the execution seemed merely nothing more than your above-average DVD horror flick.
