The Descent

Neil Marshall does it again! From the brilliantly entertaining werewolf flick Dog Soldiers and now this. If you're wondering what the hell this movie is, it's a flick that was released theatrically in July over in the UK. The states won’t see it for a while since Lion's Gate owns the rights, and so far haven't posted a release date. Now let’s not get this confused with The Cave (coming out August 26th) or what I'd like to call Pitch Black-underground. Hands down, this is one of the best horror movies I've seen in a long time and for once all the hype around a movie is true. The Descent follows a group of adventurous women, as they enter a large pit deep in the forest, which leads to an unknown and possibly unexplored cave system. Led by the butch-but-somehow-still-hot Juno, the women find themselves trapped and not alone.... and we're not talkin' about bats here people.

This film oozes all kinds of original. The first half is an interesting and thrilling watch as the women go about exploring the cave and encounter a little trouble here and there. The second half is where horror elements kick into full gear as they come across a strange new breed of predators that just loooovvee fresh outside meat. I even had an "oh shit" moment while viewing the movie thanks to the excellent atmosphere and constant darkness within the cave. Now why can't we have movies like this here in the states? I liked how the movie had an all-female cast, because normally when a group of people come across creatures, or killers, or ghosts, they're a mixed young batch of what I refer to as the "three D's" -- druggies, drunkards, and dumbasses. If we had an all male cast we'd see nothing but a lot of machismo mumbo-jumbo, and a misplaced stoner somewhere that provides the comic relief. Nope, in this movie we've got a serious group of female leads that are looking for nothing but a little adventure.

Now about the predators -- I don't wanna spoil anything, but let’s just say they are pretty badass and original, in my opinion. They are also associated with a lot of the sweet gore scenes. Speaking of which, the film doesn't hold back on the blood and gore. Hell, we even have one of the leads fall into a pit of blood! I'm definitely adding this movie to my DVD collection whenever it hits shelves.

OVERALL

If there's ever a horror movie that you had to absolutely see, let this be it! This is one of the best horror flicks I've seen in a long time. Hot chicks + scares + blood and guts + a large group of strange sharp-toothed-cave-dwelling-predators = brilliance.

Ya, you can't go wrong with this film 6 good looking hot chicks, blood and gore, scary claustrophobic atmosphere and the tension builds up to keep you on the edge of your seat, and large groups of humenoid cave-dwellers.. I have to say it's brilliant! Now this deserves a 10....

First off, I will say how this film was a classical masterpiece, It had everything you want to see in a "pure horror film." The elements were: awesome character devlopment, great story-line, scary scenes, intensity, claustrophopic feel, awesome performance, your constantly on the edge of your seat, and gore! Now to the person who wrote that they didn't understand this film, well pendeja, it's about 6 girls who goes in a unexplored-cave, they get trapped, well before all this happened sarah loses her kid and her husband. So she is in a trauma condition, so anyways once in the cave they explore it, basically building tension and intensity; once the monster are revealed that's when the film get horryfying. Now as the movie progress you start seeing changes in these women, they are basically become evolved because of the dark, so once juno kills one of the girls by "accident", shauna character finds out. Once you lost your husband and your girl, and find out that one of your best friend slept with the guy, plus finding out that your best friend killed your other best friend! Now your are bound to become crazy. So basically that's what you didn't get, the whole movie is about shauna and natalie relationship going wrong, and how no one can get out of the cave without experiancing a nightmare and going crazy. So that's it, is just Shauna going crazy, step by step, torturing to watch but is what makes a good horror film. Now that to me it's not boring, and that to me it's not confusing, you know what I don't even think you have seen a lot of Horror, to tell a very bad one to a masterpiece, and this my friend is a masterpiece! 10 out 10

I have seen alot of horror movies in my 31 years on this earth, but I just did not get this flim. It starts out BORING and gets worse. I don't understand it. The only good part I thought was good was when one of the girls kills her friend, and blames it on the whatever those things are. So someone explain it to me I just don't get this flim at all. Also the ending sucked you know what.

As a life-long fan of horror, i am always looking for that film to creep me the frack out and possibly even make me see things in the dark that aren't even there. Nothing scares me anymore. THIS movie scared me in more ways than one and i literally had to take a shower afterward. If you haven't seen this WATCH IT! The ending just really sealed the deal for me too, and though some people don't care for it, i thought it was executed perfectly; manipulating my emotions just enough to screw me. 10/10 easily.

This movie was great. The plot was original, and the cave creatures kicked ass.

hey the descent creaters I loved the movie..... theres just one thing I hated and that made no sense.....the little girl dying in the beginning..... honestly was there a reason for that. I think the movie would have been just as good if not better without that scene.....but if you have a sequel please leave out child death scenes......
