The Hole
This is another movie that I heard get a lot of mainly positive stuff for. It's a good movie, but some of it seems too unbelievable and I found the main character, played by Thora Birch, incredibly annoying.
The story is about these teens in a private school. A girl named Liz likes this rich and popular guy named Mike, so her friend, Martin, decides to set them up to hang out with each other. Liz, the girl's friend, Frankie, Mike, and his friend, all decide to spend a weekend in an old underground bomb shelter. They decide to do that, because they don't want to go to the school field trip and it gives Liz time to get the popular guy to like her. After the weekend ends they try to get out, but find that they are locked in. The question then is did the girl's friend Martin, who came up with the whole plan, lock them in or is there another story to it?
I thought the movie really hooked me right from the beginning, with Thora Birch's character climbing out from the whole and running to the private school, where she calls the cops and screams into the phone. She gets picked up by the police and that's where she starts explaining what happened in the "hole". The movie has an innovate an original story, but I thought Thora Birch's character, Liz, was really stupid and annoying. You'd have to see the movie to understand why. It just seems too unrealistic. This film is more of a thriller than horror, since there's really nothing scary about this.
When I first heard about it last year, for some reason I thought it was a slasher film about someone killing partying teens within an underground bomb shelter. I must have gotten it mixed up with another movie or something . The acting and directing was very well done. The story was good, but became more predictable as time went on and I have mixed feelings about the ending. I'm not quite sure if I liked how it ended or if I felt it should have ended a different way. It was still good either way.
I would have given the movie a higher rating, but I felt some things that happened in the movie to be too unrealistic and thought the Liz character was annoying for the crap she was doing in the film. The story is really good though and it gets more interesting as the plot thickens about what REALLY happened in the hole. I don't really know when this movie will be released here in the US, but it shouldn't be too long. Be sure to rent it when it comes out.
OVERALL
The film had a good, innovate, and original story. It wasn’t scary, as it’s more of a thriller, but keeps you interested from the start. Predictable towards the end and unrealistic in parts, but an overall good movie to watch. Check this if you're looking for something interesting and original.
