Timber Falls

Timber Falls is the latest stab in the backwoods survival horror department, which also happens to be one of my favorite sub-genres, so I was obviously looking forward to catching this flick. Naturally, movies like these are all pretty much the same, so many attempt to add their own little twists to keep the viewers interested, and this movie is no different. Sadly, it still falls victim to the standard clichés and predictability that overrun these types of films.

The story follows a young couple on a weekend camping trip in the mountains. After encountering a little trouble with a few punk rednecks, the couple finally settles on top of a nice scenic mountain, where the two spend their last peaceful night together. The following day, the man discovers that his girl has gone missing, leading him to think she may have been kidnapped by the three locals they encountered the previous day. Unbeknownst to him, she's actually being held hostage by a deranged religious family that is in need of a newborn child and will do anything to get one.

Although the movie is incredibly predictable, it picks up early on (namely when the woman goes missing), which was a nice surprise since I'm used to films taking a good 45-minutes or-so before the locals mix-it-up with the outsiders. However, the early start meant the pacing would have to suffer later on, which it does around the half-way mark. I really would have enjoyed the movie more had it primarily been about the man searching for his girl and confronting the family towards the end, but sadly, the film chose to go a less interesting route.

The production values are good, giving the movie a theatrical look, however, the script itself is definitely straight-to-DVD material. Naturally there's at least one deformed member of the family, who also happens to do all the grunt work. Sporting a modified sickle that splits into two blades, it seems to be the weapon of choice, and rightfully so. There's a good amount of blood towards the end, and a nice decapitation scene, but not a whole lot of gore otherwise.

OVERALL

The movie threw a couple interesting ideas out there, but in the end still falls prey to the standard clichés and predictability that films like these usually fall for. There's a decent amount of blood, and a little gore towards the end, but nothing spectacular. The film simply ends as another mediocre effort in the backwoods survival sub-genre.

Ok, I am not going to watch this film, because it just looks like other backwood films. But their is a few horror films that are very good, from 2006 to 2008. The Descent (original, very good), 28 weeks later (not original but still very good), Rec (original), Dawn of the Dead (not original but still very good), Wrong turn 2 (alright not original but still pretty good), Borderland (not original but still pretty good), Cloverfield (very good), and more....

I totally agree with Ste, wrong turn was horrible. The plot was stupid, the gore was cheap. Didn't care for the bright bink guts. But I don't know about this one. I'll watch it when it comes out on DVD.
