The Toolbox Murders

I really had no desire to see this movie until recently when it was decided to be remade by director Tobe Hooper. Although the remake has little to do with the original, I decided to check it anyway. In the end it was a pretty bad flick, but at least the beginning was kinda cool. The story is about a series of murders that are all taken place within a small apartment complex. The killer used a varied amount of tools within' a toolbox, hence the name. The murders stop once a young girl gets kidnapped and her older brother decides to take it on himself and find out who could have done such a thing. With the help of another local boy, they try to uncover the mystery and discover more than the cops ever did.

Well, the movie starts off pretty interesting with a handful of murders all taken place back-to-back. It goes on for about 15 minutes and the people dye pretty fast, but then after that the movie just goes into "boring-mode." There are maybe a couple more murders after the girl gets kidnapped, but that's about it. The rest is just a bunch of talk and the killer (although already obvious) is revealed about half-way through the film, despite the fact he wore a mask when he did the killings, leaving the audience to guess at his identity.

This movie had one of the most boring scenes I've seen in a horror flick that involved a 15-or-so-minute rant the killer gives the girl he kidnapped. Ultimately it does explain why he did what he did, but the rest of the dialogue was just a waste of time and I immediately hit the fast-forward button. The deaths were nothing special and I expected more gore that it didn't deliver. I saw the "uncut" version of the movie that had one scene where a woman masturbates in the tub while the killer watches that was supposedly cut out of many other versions -- nothing really special unless you're a big nudity buff. There wasn't really anything else to cut other than that.

The movie started out pretty good, but quickly turns into an incredibly predictable and lame story with a lot of pointless dialogue and silly situations. I would have given it a lower-rating, but I've seen worse and at least it wasn't entirely bad. After the movie ends and before the credits, we're shown a brief message saying the events were true or something, trying to pull a Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie was supposedly banned for a while, I think just because of that one masturbation scene. Wusses.

OVERALL

Starts off good, but then goes down the toilet. Too much pointless dialogue and scenes. Not recommended.
