Wilderness
Releasing on DVD in December in its native country of the UK, this film marks Michael J. Bassett's second directorial effort after Deathwatch in 2002. It was clear the man had a few things right in the horror department, so I was curious to see what his next endeavor would be. Finally comes Wilderness an unconventional slasher that pits a group of juveniles in a supposedly uninhabited island after one of their own commits suicide. Of course, unbeknownst to the youths they're prey to an unseen hunter that stalks and murders each of them in a variety of ways. Not only do they have to fend from the hunter, but also his pack of vicious dogs that attack and retreat by a simple whistle from their master.
Although the movie has its flaws and falls victim to predictability, it does manage to keep the viewer entertained; from the gory mauling from the dogs, to a man tearing his leg off of a bear trap, they spare no expense when it comes to blood and gore. I have to say that although the movie isn't entirely original, nor is it scary, it's still an interesting ride and leaves me to believe that Michael J. Bassett improves as he progresses. Currently there's no word on a US release, but I wouldn't be surprised if it hits DVD sometime next year.
OVERALL
Although predictable, the movie manages to be entertaining by delivering interesting characters, kills, and situations. Worth a check whenever it becomes readily available in the US.
