My three best movies to watch on Friday the 13th (aside from Friday the 13th)

Another Friday The 13th is upon us. This time it falls on October 13, 2017. Considered as an unlucky day, it is widely associated with killings, bad lucks and horror. The movie industry has exploited this for years, with a number of films based on the ‘Friday The 13th’ superstition gaining worldwide popularity. We now look at my three best horror films to watch on Friday The 13th that don't star an iconic hockey-masked killer. You may have watched them a million times, but they are certain to give you the creeps if you decide to watch them again.

The Pact (2012)

Released in 2012 and produced on a budget of under $500,000, The Pact is one of the best horror movies made over the past decade. Starring Caity Lotz and Casper Van Dien, the movie is centred on Annie, whose mother has recently died, as she tries to find out why her sister and cousin have disappeared. The Pact is tense and taut with suspense from start to finish. What makes this film special is the twist in the tale. The ending is one of the best and most twisted in all horror films, which is the main reason why The Pact transcends movies of the same genre. The fact that the film grossed over $7 million worldwide despite being made a very small budget underlines its quality and popularity.

Final Destination 3 (2006)

Not all sequels necessarily work well and are successful, but Final Destination 3 is easily the best in the series. The third instalment in the Final Destination film series, it is set five years after the first movie and is based on a student’s premonition about a deathly rollercoaster ride. Wendy Christensen, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, is able to save herself and some of those who went on the ride, but then Death starts to hunt down the survivors who were meant to die. Final Destination 2 is not bad either. It is centred on Kimberly having a premonition of a highway pileup. What is interesting about this movie is the different signs that were used in order to suggest to the audience how the events could unfold. In one scene, the horseshoe, which is one of the many international good luck charms, is upside down, suggesting bad luck.

Lights Out (2016)

The title may sound corny and probably gives away the genre of the movie, but there is no doubt that Lights Out is one of the best horror films made in the 21st century. In what was David F. Sandberg’s major directorial debut, the American supernatural horror film has well-known cast such as Maria Bello of Coyote Ugly, Teresa Palmer - who starred in I Am Number Four - and Gabriel Bateman of the TV series Stalker. Lights Out, which made a profit of over $140 million, centres on Rebecca, who must decipher the reason behind her little brother's experiences that once tested her sanity, which leads her to confront an entity attached to their mother.

Among the other horror movies that you could watch on Friday October 13, 2017 are The Host, Zombeavers, Creep and Saw. Enjoy, if you can!
