Honestly, I turned this on without so much as reading the synopsis, cast, crew…nothing. I think this is often the best way to watch a film: go in blindly.
Gush is quite…unique. It’s saturated in female power, femininity, and strength which doesn’t turn off even the most conservative woman from encouraging a mindset of authority and purpose. Gush does just that and continues on with all questions answered to my satisfaction. Nicely done!
Sally is a sad and broken writer, trying to make her marriage work after surviving a terrible car accident which led to a heartbreaking miscarriage. She finds her solace in a bottle while surrendering to her writer’s block and accepting her devastating misery. When husband Kevin instructs her that Owen (her never-before met in person) publisher wants to ship her off to his quiet cabin to reclaim her mojo, she reluctantly agrees and starts to fight the demons that have been plaguing her. And her marriage.
Almost immediately, her uneasiness is evident after discovering all the usual creature comforts are removed. From poor cell service to a typewriter (yes, my millennial friends! The clunky contraption that even I learned on back in….” the day”), is her only mode of producing a new horror book. Luckily, she has enough booze to treat her writing paralysis, but it’s still on the back burner. Until the appearance of a most mysterious and voluptuous woman practically intrudes into her home and heart, changing everything in an instant. This muse is as puzzling as she is silent, with hypnotic power and serenity which becomes the divine intervention Sally needs.
Unfortunately, additional distractions that come about to damage her tranquility are met with a most gruesome demise, making it abundantly clear that Sally needs this mystical woman more than expected.
Beautiful images of their bond are displayed through lovemaking, blood-drenched showers and masturbatory scenes, infiltrated with some realizations of dark wishes being fulfilled with little resentment, yet a bit of evil pleasure. Such is life of a scorned woman and her lover.
As Sally’s inhibitions fade, her creative juices overflow and well…they just gush. At least, that’s my perception of the previous punishment felt by her darker moments that are now enlightening her purpose and fulfilling her newfound sentiment of living life with a spirited light of preemptive happiness.
But if you are looking for an answer to that one big lingering elephant in the room which Sally herself asks several times…please do not ask me. I will never spoil the delicious fun out of a distinctive story such as Gush. Just go give it a watch.
