| The Exorcism of Emily Rose This film is based on a true story in the 1970's of a young German woman named Anneliese Michel, whose death sparked a trial against the exorcist and family. Thanks to the marketing, a lot of people might have gone to see this movie thinking it was the next The Exorcist of sorts. I'm sure they were surprised to find that it was a story-driven drama rather than a straight-out horror flick. No, most of the film is shown through flashbacks, with the rest of it set in present time and around a defense attorney and a courthouse. The film basically shows you two sides of the story -- one showing the actual possession of Emily, and the other more "realistic" approach of how she had a form of Epilepsy, which caused all her spasms and what-not. In the end it's really up to the audience to decide what really happened, which is a big plus towards the quality of the film. I watched this expecting very little, and actually enjoyed it quite a bit in the end. The flashback scenes showing the visions and possession of Emily are suprisingly chilling at times. I believe thanks to good atmosphere and acting, the "horror" was pulled off successfully. Then we've got the courtroom Drama that also somehow works. Co-writer/director Scott Derrickson doesn't have a lot of films under his belt, but he may be more notable for his DTV addition to the Hellraiser series with Hellraiser: Inferno back in 2000. It seems he's grown quite a bit as a director, and it really shows here. In comparison to Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist and Exorcist: The Beginning, this is the far superior picture, both in scares, and in story. OVERALL Comments Page 1 of 1:
