| The Hazing The Hazing is finally here after so much coverage has been posted on UHM for the past year-or-so, including an interview with director Rolfe Kanefsky. Described as "Evil Dead meets Scream" Rolfe brings us a comedy horror flick that goes back to the roots of much of the horror that came out of the 80's. So the question is did he manage to dish out a good direct-to-video amongst countless other recent DTV horror flicks? The answer is yes. The film is a made for horror fans and only horror fans would really enjoy and appreciate what it is. If you look past the little-to-no plot and just sit back and watch, you'll see what I mean. So the story is about a group of fraternity and sorority pledges sent on a scavenger hunt for various items on a list they were given. Depending on the items, you'll get a good score, which would result in the winners joining the fraternity/sorority. The group is split in two and in an attempt to catch up with the winning group, the other group looks for a forbidden item on the bottom of the list, which is said to be a book to open the gates of hell (of course that's just a rumor, right?). They manage to get the book after stealing it from a crazed "professor" played by Brad Dourif (Lord of the Rings trilogy). In the process they "accidentally" kill him, which sends his soul on a bent of murder and revenge and attempt to continue to open them pesky hell gates. Oh did I mention he also possesses the souls of the living? Yep. Amongst the cast, you may recognize a couple other faces like Parry Shen of Better Luck Tomorrow fame. He also had a role in a late-90's Full Moon flick called Shrieker. Also, you may recognize B-horror scream queen Tiffany Shepis as one of the lead females. Model (hot model at that) Brooke Burke makes her film debut with a cameo appearance in the beginning of the film. Oh, with a cast like that, how could you go wrong right? The movie obviously isn't anything original, but that's not what Rolfe was going for. No, he was going for something to entertain as well as scare us and he did a good job; I know I was very entertained. So I'm sure you're wondering what the gore-status in the movie is. Well it's not too bad; it has its fair share, and the special effects were better than I expected. The only problem I had effects-wise was the make-up on those that were possessed. I figured they'd go for a more evil-look, but instead they'd just look a little wrinkled with pointy white eyebrows. Oh well, can't win'em all! I was thinking about giving this a 7-rating, but I decided against it since there wasn't a whole lot of plot going, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad movie; just more of a brainless one. Rolfe's got another flick coming DTV called Corpses, but I'm not too sure about that. I'm just hoping his next horror flicks will be like this or better. OVERALL Comments Page 0 of 0:
