Inferno

I've wanted to check this flick for years, but my local video stores never carried it for some reason. Luckily I finally got a chance to view it. I've been a Dario Argento fan for some years now and despite this movie not being very good, it was still nice to finally see it.

This is the second installment in what Dario described as the "Three Mothers Trilogy," which is basically about these three sisters, who are actually Satan-worshipping witches that supposedly ruled the world with "sorrows, tears, and darkness," or at least that's what was described in this movie. Apparently the three split up all over the world -- one was in the movie Suspiria, who was described as the "mother of tears and beauty," who held up in a Ballet school in Rome. The second mother is in this film, who's described as "the youngest and cruelest" of the three. This mother is held up in an old apartment building in New York.

In Suspiria we're introduced to the first mother and we're given little-to-no background info. This movie acts as an explanation as well a continuation of the story. Though, the sad thing about this movie is that it's also the more boring of the two flicks. Suspiria managed to capture the audience’s interest, while this one leads the audience in dif. directions, and it's sad to say, but the only really good thing about this would have to be the explanation.

The story this time is about a woman who finds an old book from a local antique dealer entitled "The Three Mothers." She reads the story in it, which gives us the explanation we've been wanting. Fearing that the mother in the book is in the apartment building, she calls for the aid of her brother in Rome, but by the time he comes to help her he discovers she's dead. Could she have been killed for knowing too much? Hmmm, perhaps. This is where the main characters switch from the young woman to the brother who searches the apartment building for clues and discovers more than he bargained for!! Ahhhh!

Well anyway, this movie was just too incredibly slow-paced for my liking. Not much was going on; just a lot of investigating. Like I said above, the only thing I found entertaining was the explanation and maybe a few other scenes that had some action going on. I was actually so bored that I'd check my email and do various other things on the computer while the movie was still playing. It's not like I was missing much anyway. I was going to originally give it a 6-rating, but since I'm basing this review on entertainment-factor, I'm gonna have to give it a 5. You can check a cameo appearance from the third mother later on in the film, which'll set things up for the next and final installment in the Three Mothers trilogy, which takes place in Germany with the mother described as the "oldest" and "biggest in size." I believe Dario plans on shooting that film in August 2004.

Some interesting tidbits on the film -- James Woods was supposedly the choice for the lead male role, but he was committed to Videodrome. This is one of the last movies Special Effects creator Mario Bava worked on before his death.

OVERALL

Only worth a check if you want to see continuation of the Three Mothers trilogy, otherwise pass
