Ritual
I don't know why, but for some reason this was supposed to be a third Tales From the Crypt film, even though the Crypt Keeper was nowhere to be found. I believe this is also a remake of a movie called I Walked With A Zombie. So much mystery behind this film, hmmm... Well anyway, this was a decent movie. Although it is very hard to mix drama and horror together, this movie sure came damn close to it.
The plot is about a doctor who loses her license after a mishap with a patient. She desperately seeks a new job and discovers a doctor is needed in Jamaica to treat a very sick patient. Knowing she can't work anywhere else as an unlicensed doctor, she takes the job. Everything seems perfect for her, working with a rich man and taking care of his mysteriously sick brother. It doesn't take long before she discovers what happened to the previous doctor that cared for the guy and some of the other people associated with the family. Is there is a killer on the loose or is there something far more supernatural at work here?
This was a pretty decent movie. I didn't know what to expect from it, but I was pretty surprised with the drama-like direction it took. I thought this was one of the better voodoo-related horror films. There weren't any good scares, but it had some decent blood and gore. I thought the casting job was done pretty well. It was interesting to see the older sister from Ferris Bueller's Day Off playing the lead chick and Tim Curry does another excellent performance as always. We can't forget his performance as Pennywise in Stephen King's IT.
I don’t know why they bothered putting a weird looking reptile lady on the cover art, but we only see a glimpse of that in a dream sequence. I guess it was just a ploy to get more people interested in the film; tricky bastards. I figured I'd give this movie a 6-rating. It was slow-paced, but it had a good story and it kept my interest. I liked it, even though I'm sure others won’t agree, but who knows when this baby will come to the states anyway. It’s been out for quite some time overseas.
OVERALL
Slow-paced
and a little misleading, but worth a look for a good story,
but avoid if you're looking for a real horror film.
