Scary Movie 3
This
is the second sequel to the original that initially said there wouldn't
be a sequel to. Of course they lied and vomited the horrible part 2 a
year after the first's release. A couple years later and after the Wayans
gave up on the series, David Zucker took over as director. Zucker is no
stranger to successful comedies, with movies such as Airplane!,
the first two Naked Guns, and the underrated comedy BASEketball under his belt, it was no question that this film would be undoubtedly
better than the lame sequel. I never listed this movie on UHM, because
the premise didn't seem to really spoof many horror flicks, and seemed
to just revolve around some kind of alien invasion (Signs spoof) with a cursed video tape thrown in the mix (The
Ring spoof). I admit that after seeing the movie I was wrong,
because it did have its share of horror spoofing, but still fails in comparison
to the first and, hell, even the second. Still, that doesn't mean it's
a bad flick.
The
story once again follows young Cindy (Anna Faris) as a curious reporter
hunting for answers on the mysterious crop circles that have appeared
on a small farm, and also the truth behind a supposedly haunted video
tape. The movie has a lot of hits and misses; some jokes work well, while
others just barely get a chuckle. I noticed quite a few scenes that were
shown in the trailer didn't appear in the final cult. They were mainly
the Matrix spoofs, but you can view those in the extras on the DVD. Also
on the DVD you get to view the alternate ending (around 15 minutes), which
I thought was just plain bad. It looked like they didn't know what kind
of ending they were going for. You've got the Hulk fighting against these
weird-looking aliens, then it turns into the Matrix;
it was just a confusing mess. I'm glad they didn't stick with that ending.
It
was good to see that this film brought back a lot of celebrity cameos
(much like the first), which was another plus compared to the failed part
2. There's already works on yet another sequel, with David Zucker back
again as director. If I remember correctly it was going to spoof Harry
Potter and other films I can't remember. Sadly it seems Anna Faris might
not return, but I guess it's about time we get a new lead. She's done
her part and needs to move onto other things. Hopefully the series won't
go too far from its initial spoof of the horror genre, because they'll
have to be rid of the "Scary Movie" title.
Then again, we all know that won't happen, because that'll mean less $$. Money-hungry
bastards.
OVERALL
A
decent comedy, but still fails in comparison to the first movie. Has some
hits and misses when it came to the jokes, but it was an overall enjoyable
flick. Worth a check if you're a fan of the series.
