Underworld

Yes, this was one of those horror flicks that I've been anticipating for some time and I'm glad I finally got to check it, despite the fact I kept dozing off for a few seconds at a time in the first 40 minutes of the film. I should have gotten more sleep the previous night. The story is about a vampire warrior named Selene, who hunts Lychans (Werewolves) for a living. She goes after a human who the Lychans seem to have a strange liking to and discovers that he's a very valuable asset to the Lychans. She ends up falling for the guy and protects him from both being killed by fellow vampires and being taken away by the Lychans. There's a little more to it than that, but I don't wanna spoil too much.

The premise for the film is pretty original, although this is obviously not the first film to combine the two species together. I've seen a few older horror flicks that have a vampire fight a werewolf, but the only one that comes to mind right now is Howling 6, which I thought really sucked. This is the only movie that combines the two and actually pulls it off right. This film has everything for those who want horror or action. I was actually surprised by the fact that the movie never really stopped with the action. It has a good story that hooks you from the beginning and keeps you glued to your seat. Sure there are similarities to other flicks like Blade or The Matrix, but what film really doesn't have similarities to other films now-a-days anyway?

If you're a vampire or werewolf fan then you'll definitely dig this flick. The characters were pretty evenly badass between the two species, although the story was obviously mainly more focused on the vampires because of Selene's character. There's decent gore, but sadly no nudity from Kate, but I guess it's for the best. I really liked the dark gothic tone the movie had and all the excellent gunplay. This is the only vampire flick that I can remember that doesn't mention crosses, holy water, or even stakes, which is a very good thing, because I was getting tired of the same old stuff. All the weapons used in this film are basically modified guns to help fight against the species and kill them at a faster rate. Very cool stuff.

So what didn't I like about the movie? Actually there wasn't much that I didn't like. It had a lot of good action and didn't dumb down with mindless humor in certain scenes like a lot of horror or action flicks. One thing that kind of let me down was I expected maybe a little more action and gunplay or a big fight sequence towards the end. Oh well. I just wished I was more awake during the first half. I suppose I decided to give it an 8-rating, because I felt that it was best for the movie. It was very entertaining, but it was far from being anything spectacular. It's a good movie none-the-less. Not surprisingly there were talks of a sequel a little before the film even came out, so expect to possibly see a sequel to this sometime in the future. Hopefully the sequel will be even more action packed.

OVERALL

A good watch for both horror and action fans. Doesn't slow down on the action and keeps you interested from the start. Check this baby out.

You gave Sleepaway Camp, Evil Dead and Grindhouse the same score as Underworld. You're saying Underworld is as good as those 3, come on dude.

I love this movie. Kate Beckinsale rocks as a vampire. This movie is far from what she usually does. This is probably the first Vampire/Werewolf movie that isn't really a horror movie, but more of an action movie. I do wish that there was a fight between Selene and Viktor, but beggers can't be choosers. what i really liked was the story and the setting and the SFX were awesome. i give the movie a 9.5 yeah i do admit it was missing something but it is my favorite vampire/werewolf movie, and to my knowledge the only vampire/werewolf.
