As the nights start to draw in and the leaves begin to turn, your thoughts will no doubt turn towards the creepiest night of the year – Halloween. Part of the preparations for Halloween involve working your way through classic horror films to get you in the spooky spirit, and there are many horror films themed to particular subjects. If you are fanatical about sports, for instance, there are plenty of sports-themed horror films available out there. Here are five horror movies about sports, taking in baseball, football, soccer and roller derby, that you have to watch before Halloween.
The Catcher (1998)
After spending 17 years in a lunatic asylum for killing his abusive father with a baseball bat, talented baseball player Johnny is released. Soon after, he embarks on a killing spree targeting baseball players, the ghost of his father acting as umpire. If you’re a baseball fan, The Catcher is not to be missed, and will definitely leave you shivering the next time you visit the ballpark.
All Cheerleaders Die (2013)
Maddy, a high school outcast, joins the school’s cheerleading squad with the intention of taking down the captain of the football team. However, supernatural forces intervene to thrust the cheerleading squad into an entirely different battle. With school football being synonymous with the fall months, this is the perfect horror film to get you in the mood for fall football season, accompanied with NFL sports betting between games and movies.
Kick (2015)
If soccer is more your thing, 2015’s Kick is the horror film for you. Avid soccer fans Dan and Steve bribe their way into a London Premier League stadium for a night of illicit underground soccer. However, things take a turn for the worse after the match finishes, and they realize that they are in fact trapped in a game for their own survival. Part horror film, part social commentary on the less-salubrious aspect of English soccer, this is a film that is sure to stick with you long after the final whistle.
MurderDrome (2013)
Australian cult classic MurderDrome gives the sport of roller derby the horror treatment. When roller derby star Cherry Skye falls for Brad, she also ignites the fury of Brad’s ex, Hell Grazer, who also happens to be Skye’s roller derby nemesis. This romantic rivalry arouses the wrath of a malevolent demon spirit hungry for human souls. Will Skye and Brad make it out of the MurderDrome alive?
Fight Like a Girl (2015)
From Daniel Armstrong, the director of MurderDrome, comes 2015’s Fight Like a Girl (original title From Parts Unknown), a horror film that this time centers on the world of female pro wrestling. Inspired by her late wrestler father, Charlie is an up-and-coming pro wrestler herself. However, when the shady business practices of her boss threaten to unleash a swarm of brain-eating wrestling zombies onto the earth, Charlie might be the only wrestler capable of defeating them in the wrestle-pocalypse.
