Splice (2010)

Cube director Vincenzo Natali brings us yet another thought-provoking feature with Splice, a sci-fi effort that didn't quite capture the audiences that it should have at the box office. Poorly marketed as a horror film, Splice is more of sci-fi drama, with minor horror elements thrown in. The story brings forth many ethical questions and debate on the right and wrongs of medical science and is probably one of the more smart "horror" films to come out in years.
Trilogy of Terror II (1996)

Trilogy of Terror II is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. Having seen it when it first aired on the USA network a day before Halloween back in 1996, and being an impressionable young horror fan at the time, it was an enjoyable night's worth of entertainment that I never forgot. I decided to revisit that night by giving the film another look to see if it holds up from the last time I saw it, and to my surprise, it does.

Original co-writer/director Dan Curtis returns for this sequel, which is definitely a flawed film, but still managed to hold my attention from the start, delivering some predictable, but entertaining stories that in many respects are still more creative than what we get from the genre now-a-days.
Drive Thru (2007)

Drive Thru is a film that I've been meaning to watch for a few years now, but only after recently re-discovering it streaming legally online that I decided to finally give it a check. The flick turned out to be a surprisingly decent horror parody, despite its many shortcomings.
Heartless (2009)

Heartless is a film that explores a more psychological and emotional approach within the genre, giving us more dramatic elements and character development than what we usually encounter in horror, and I personally liked the direction it took. The movie is a nice break from the usual dull and predictable tripe we get now-a-days, especially in the straight-to-DVD front.
Hard Ride to Hell (2010)

Hard Ride to Hell is an attempted throwback to earlier road films and seems to borrow a lot from the similarly-themed Race with the Devil, but in the end (aside from a couple notable genre faces) it's just another easily forgettable straight-to-DVD horror effort.
The Horde (2009)

France has become quite the country to rely on when it comes to bloody and hyper-violent horror flicks, so when word came down that the genre was going to get a zombie film from'em naturally it was met with a lot of high expectations. The Horde is a movie that I've been anticipating since I first heard of it a couple years back and finally having seen the pic, it pains me to say that it left me rather disappointed...
The New Daughter (2009)

Based on a short story by John Connolly, The New Daughter was completed in '09 and pretty much sat on the shelves until it received a quiet and VERY limited theatrical release last December. It's sad to see all these disappointing 3D efforts and remakes get such wide theatrical treatments, while creative little genre pics get swept under the rug, but that's just one of many examples of what's wrong with Hollywood now-a-days.

Silent Madness is a little known and easily forgettable 80's slasher that got a 3D release in theaters before landing on its inevitable 2D VHS platform. Though the film rips off several other genre pics, its above-average bodycount and a couple interesting elements in the story make it a decent watch.
