Monsters (2010)

Described as "this year's District 9," Monsters is definitely love-hate-type film, especially when you go in expecting to see what the title would imply -- Monsters, because you will be sorely disappointed. The flick is, in fact, more of a human drama with a side of romance and a dash of sci-fi and thriller elements for good measure. I personally liked the movie, but I knew exactly what kind of film it was before actually seeing it.
Frozen (2010)

Writer/director Adam Green has made quite a name for himself among the genre in a mere handful of years. Debuting with the gory throwback slasher Hatchet, then the mind-bending thriller Spiral a year later. He has returned once again with the psychological survival pic Frozen, a film that I wasn't quite sure what to expect from going in. Surprisingly, the movie turned out to be quite a treat, despite the fact that it simply follows three characters and primarily takes place on a ski lift.
Primal (2009)

Primal turned out to be a surprisingly entertaining Aussie flick, despite borrowing from several other genre pics.

The movie follows a group of friends as they journey to an unknown jungle location in search of an ancient rock painting that hasn't been seen in over 100 years. With only old photos to go by, they somehow manage to find their way to the painting, but not before venturing through an ominous old cave, where one of the girls cuts her arm before passing out.
Blood Games (1990)

Alternatively titled Baseball Bimbos in Hillbilly Hell (which pretty much sums up the entire movie), Blood Games is an easily forgotten backwoods survival horror flick to come out've the early 90's. The transition from the 80's was definitely a slow one, as the film displays all the stereotypes one can expect from the genre during the period. However, despite its many shortcomings, the movie itself is still a fairly decent watch on a dull day.

Suck (2009)

With the genre's recent surge of vampire films, it's hard to find something actually good among all the crap. The recent Canadian-based vamp flick Suck, luckily doesn't fall into the crap-side of things and despite its name, does not suck.

The film follows a underperforming rock band, ironically named "The Winners" that travels from one small town-bar after another, until they strike it big after their female bass player leaves with a strange man named "Queeny" one night, only to return the next day a new woman (or vampire).
Burning Bright (2010)

A young woman (Briana Evigan) and her autistic little brother are trapped inside their boarded up home during a hurricane, and the only other company they have is an F'n murderous Bengal tiger! That's the basic premise for Burning Bright, and as ludicrous as it sounds, the film itself is actually fairly decent, especially for a straight-to-DVD effort.
2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams (2010)

Tim Sullivan's sequel to the surprisingly entertaining 2001 Maniacs is finally here after being in development for a few years. Tim had problems finding the right funding for the film, which after seeing the movie, I can see why. While the first was a fun gore-filled ride, with lots of quirky characters and humor, its sequel is nothing more than a low-budget softcore wannabe splatter flick.
Bestseller (2010)

Bestseller is a new South Korean thriller that borrows from a couple notable genre flicks, but also blends a couple sub-genres together and delivers a decent little murder mystery. Not the most original of flicks, the movie does give a couple chills in the beginning and an out've-nowhere twist half way that sets the mark for a change of pace and story.
Daddy's Girl (1996)

Daddy's Girl is a little known 90's evil kid flick that I've somehow missed over the years. Being partial to the particular sub-genre, it's rare for me to find a movie that I hadn't heard of or seen before. Though the film doesn't break any new ground or offer much blood or body count, the decent writing and terrorizing lil' red-headed star delivers the right amount of charm, innocence, and deviousness to make it an above-average watch.
