Living Death (2009)

Also known as Possessed, this is a new and surprisingly good supernatural flick from South Korea. The movie veers from the standard long-haired pale-skinned ghosties and focuses more on an interesting tale of possession and greed. 

We follow a young college student who returns home after her little sister turns up missing. We soon discover that there's more to the story than what we're lead to believe, when people who knew the girl commit suicide for undetermined reasons.

What in da hell did I just watch? This movie was all over the place! First it's a slasher spoof then all of a sudden it's a zombie flick; WTF!? So, this is a new horror comedy to come out of Spain from director Miguel Martí that tries just a little too hard to please the viewer and ends up just confusing itself.

The story follows the high-maintenance Bárbara, who spends her days in short skirts and lots of makeup and her nights slicing and dicing her fellow students and staff 'round the local campus. Why? "Why not!?" she says in the movie, and at the camera no-less! Yes, there are several scenes throughout the movie where she will look directly into the camera and talk to it, which I personally hate in movies. Sometimes it can work, but other times (like this one) it's just silly, but I guess that's basically what the director was going for anyway.
Open Graves (2009)

Wow, what a horrible cover. Anyway, originally titled "Mamba" (named after the board game our leads play) the pic was completed back in 2007 and once had a release date for sometime in '08. Of course it never got proper distribution until September of '09 when it premiered on the dreaded SyFy channel. Naturally if a movie makes its debut on that channel it pretty much means only one thing -- it sucks. That's not always the case, but for Open Graves, that's exactly the reason.

The story is your standard clichéd and easily predicted tale of a group of friends who somehow get their hands on an old board game called "Mamba" that will supposedly grant the winner a wish, while the losers would suffer fates at the hands of the cards they dealt, which give a generalized idea as to how they will die. As expected from a film in this sub-genre it offers nothing we haven't already seen before.
Home Sweet Home (1981)

Home Sweet Home is 80's cheese at its best and is the perfect example as to why I love genre flicks from the decade -- even if they're bad they can be hilariously fun to watch! Before Jake Steinfeld convinced America that his 'Body by Jake' fitness equipment works, he terrorized unsuspecting couples during a thanksgiving feast with his loud grunting, heavy breathing, and uncontrollable high-pitched laughter, in a little-known slasher called Home Sweet Home.

Scared is a movie that really caught me by surprise. Once again I went in with incredibly low expectations and came out pleased by how I spent the last hour-and-a-half of my time. The premise isn't going to win any awards, but slasher flicks are usually pretty thin in the story department anyway --
