Ghostbusters

There's no official plot yet, but the rumored storyline is as follows: Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book positing that ghosts are real. Flash forward a few years and Wiig lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia U. Which is pretty sweet, until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Wiig reunites with McCarthy and the other two proton pack-packing phantom wranglers, and she gets some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and she and her team have to save the world.

PROJECT DETAILS
  • Michael K. Williams talked a bit about his role in a recent interview, confirming that Slimer will be in the film, saying: "I’m not going to lie, working with Melissa, and Kristen, and Kate, was really dope. But I got to work with Slimer, dude. Like Slimer!!! I’m in a scene with Slimer! I’m a huge ‘Ghostbusters’ fan and it was a dream come true." He added.. "I play the FBI agent who works for the mayor. Our whole thing is, we’re going to tell the people it was a flash in the sky and ‘Run along little women with your ghosts, we got this.’" (2/26/16)
  • Kristen Wiig plays "Erin Gilbert, a particle physicist, academic firebrand, spectral warrior."
  • Kate McKinnon is "Jillian Holtzmann, a nuclear engineer, munitions expert, and proton wrangler."
  • Melissa McCarthy is "Abby Yates, a paranormal researcher, supernatural scientist, and entity trapper."
  • Leslie Jones is "Patty Tolan, a ghost tracker, municipal historian, and metaphysical commando."
  • Sigourney Weaver (Dana from the films) will also have a cameo in the movie.
  • Actress Annie Potts (Ghostbusters' secretary Janine) will have a cameo appearance in the film, but no word on who she'll play.
  • Ernie Hudson was reportedly seen on set, though it's currently unclear what kind of role he'll have in the film. Much like original cast members Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, it'll most likely be a brief cameo appearance that's unrelated to his original Ghostbusters character.
  • Filmed in Boston.
  • A new report indicates that Murray is rumored to play a character "out to debunk the new Ghostbusters crew." And in an interview Murray had this to say about finally deciding to be a part of the film, saying: "I thought about it for a very long time. Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part]."
  • Billy Murray will reportedly be in the movie in some capacity, most likely just a cameo appearance like Dan Aykroyd. It's rumored that he may possibly play a ghost since he has expressed interest in the past in only returning if he was a ghost.
  • Previously had a July 22nd 2016 release.
  • Dan Aykroyd will have a cameo appearance in the film. Rumor is that he will be playing a taxi driver in a scene with Kristen Wiig's character.
  • It's said that the rumored role Neil Casey plays is as follows: "The part I'm assuming Casey is playing is Rowan Elgin, a role written for Peter Dinklage. Elgin is a troll who spends his days antagonizing a call-in radio advice doctor as well as working on a secret machine. That machine is placed beneath the Chrysler Building to tear open a hole in reality and begin an invasion. There are ghost T-Rexs, a Times Square magically returned to the porno days and eventually a giant horned demon."
  • Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire, The Wire) plays a character named "Hawkins".
  • Matt Walsh (Veep) plays "Rourke".
  • Andy Garcia plays "the Mayor of New York City."
  • It's said that Slimer will make an appearance.
  • Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers) joins the cast as a receptionist.
  • Kristen Wiig plays "Erin Garber, a published author on the subject of the paranormal. Erin now works for Columbia University."
  • Leslie Jones plays "Abby Bergman, who co-authored the book with Garber. Since publication, the two former colleagues had a falling out and went their separate ways. Abby more actively chases ghost a la Ghost Hunters. This tension between academic investigation (Wiig’s character) and mainstream media investigation (Jones’ character) is central to the story."
  • Kate McKinnon plays "Abby Berman’s new partner, Jillian."
  • Melissa McCarthy plays "Patty, an NYC subway worker who stumbles across the main, supernatural threat in the film."
  • Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, Tammy), Kate McKinnon (SNL) and Leslie Jones (SNL) are all in negotiation to star in the film as the new Ghostbusters.
  • Co-writer/director Paul Feig had an interview recently, where he detailed his approach for the reboot, saying: "I love the first one so much I don’t want to do anything to ruin the memory of that. So it just felt like, let’s just restart it because then we can have new dynamics. I want the technology to be even cooler. I want it to be really scary, and I want it to happen in our world today that hasn’t gone through it so it’s like, oh my God what’s going on?"
  • Adding... "It’s not going to be, here is the exact same stuff. It’s also not going to go, screw you, if you like that stuff, it’s all completely different. We’re going to have fun with it, but again, bring it into our time period… If we just flop four women into the exact same personalities and roles as original, then that’s lazy filmmaking on my behalf, and who wants to see that? It’s the difficult thing about remaking a great movie. So that’s why we’re not remaking a great movie. We’re doing our take on it." Lastly, as far as scars go, he said: "I think funny people in peril and in danger is one of the best forms of comedy, and I really like things to play very real while funny things are happening. So that’s what both Katie and I really want to do with this one is make it crazy funny but also you’re scared at the same time." (10/9/14)
  • It's now official that because of years of setbacks in pursuing a sequel that the studio is looking to "reboot" the franchise instead. The studio has attached Paul Feig to direct and co-write with Katie Dippold (The Heat). It will feature an all female cast, with the possibility of any remaining actors from the original films to return in some cameo appearance. (10/8/14)
  • The latest director said to be attached to the project is Paul Feig, whom helmed Bridesmaids and The Heat. The current rumor is that the producers are now pursuing a complete reboot instead of a sequel and the Ghostbusters themselves will all be female, respectively played by various comedic actresses. It's said that the script will be rewritten from scratch. (8/3/14)
  • The sad passing of actor Harold Ramis has led to Ivan Reitman stepping down as director. He will instead remain as producer and help look for a new director. He also added that the latest script is the one everyone loves and will be moving forward with, saying: "I’m not going to say how many Ghostbusters there will be in the new cast, but we are determined to retain the spirit of the original film, and I am pleased that all of this seems to have happened organically. I’m hoping we can get started by the fall, set in New York, but given the logistics and the stuff that happens, the beginning of 2015 seems more likely." (3/19/14)
  • Harold Ramis (Dr. Egon Spengler) died on February 24th 2014 due to complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. The actor was apparently set to have a cameo appearance in the film. The studio is still moving forward without his appearance, while the script is being reworked without him. (2/25/14)
  • Aykroyd had yet another interview recently where he revealed additional details on the story, saying: "It’s based upon new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University. Basically there’s research being done that…I can say that the world or our dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width, and time, become threatened by some of the research that is being done. And Ghostbusters, new Ghostbusters have to come and solve the problem." (5/20/13)
  • Dan Aykroyd revealed in a recent interview that Bill Murray will not be returning for the sequel, saying: "It's sad but we're passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn't seem to be coming and we have to move on. It's time to make the third one." Adding... "We've got a brilliant new writer on it and we'll be passing the torch on to a new generation. We're working on it to make it just right to satisfy our fans. I'm confident we'll be in production in the next year." (8/2/12)
  • The studio has hired Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Men in Black 3) to rewrite the script. (7/10/12)
  • Dan Aykroyd revealed in a recent interview that Bill Murray is pretty much determined not to return and that the project is currently in "suspended animation", saying: "I honestly don't know. At this point it's in suspended animation. The studio, the director Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis feel there must be a way to do it, but Bill Murray will not do the movie. He doesn't want to be involved. He's got six kids, houses all over America. He golfs in these tournaments where they pay him to turn up and have a laugh. He's into this life and living it. I know we'd have a lot of fun [but] I can't be mad at him. He's a friend first, a colleague second. We have a deep personal relationship that transcends business and he doesn't want to know."
  • Adding.. "We're not going to do a movie that exploits the franchise. The script has to be perfect. I'm the cheerleader, but I'm only one voice in the matter. It's a surety that Bill Murray will not do the movie, however there is still interest from the studio." (2/29/12)
  • In a recent interview Dan Aykroyd revealed that if Bill Murray doesn't return that his character may be played by a different actor. He further reveals that he's interested in bringing back Rick Moranis as Louis Tully, saying: "If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant." As for the continuing delay for the project, he adds: "The script must be perfect. We cannot release a film that is any less than that. We have more work to do." (2/13/12)
  • Filming was originally aimed to begin sometime in 2011, with a hopeful theatrical release later that year. Production was then hoped to begin in Spring 2012.
  • Dan Aykroyd offered an update on the project recently, hinting that they will move forward with or without Billy Murray, saying: "Yes, we will be doing the movie and hopefully with Mr. Murray. That is our hope. We have an excellent script. What we have to remember is that 'Ghostbusters' is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributive to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]. The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of 'Ghostbusters 3' is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood." (8/25/11)
  • Dan Aykroyd offered some details as to why they're looking to have a younger generation take over, saying: "My character, Ray, is now blind in one eye and can't drive the cadillac. He's got a bad knee and can't carry the packs... Egon is too large to get into the harness. We need young blood and that's the promise. We're gonna hand it to a new generation." (8/25/11)
  • Bill Murray has apparently been a key reason why the project hasn't moved forward, as various reports have stated over a period of several months that he has received the script, yet hasn't read it or revealed whether he wants to officially come on board the project.
  • Dan Aykroyd has taken over scripting duties, working off an earlier draft by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky (Year One, NBC's The Office).
  • Actor Bill Murray was quoted saying that he'd only return if he was killed in the "first reel," which means he will be a ghost throughout the rest of the film.
  • In the early scripting stages it was said that Sigourney Weaver's son Oscar (from the first film) was going to be grown up and now a Ghostbuster.
  • At one point original director Ivan Reitman was going to return to direct.
  • It's said that all the key characters from the original will return.
  • NBC's The Office writers/producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky will script.
  • Sometime during the 90's Dan Aykroyd wrote the script for a potential third film that had the characters being transported to an alternate and more Hellish version of Manhattan, where the people and places were all Hellish versions of themselves and the Ghostbusters would later meet the Devil. Apparently a modified version of the script was used for the video game in 2009. The studio was reportedly interested in the project, but the key actors weren't, so it never came to fruition. However, one thing that seems to have crossed over to this new script is the concept of having younger Ghostbusters taking over, while the veterans serve more as mentors.
  • This is a remake and a reported reboot of the franchise. Initially the studio wanted to create a whole new Ghostbusters universe as it was rumored that this film would be followed by a spinoff in 2017 and another film would come out after featuring characters from both movies (like they did with The Avengers). It was also said that a prequel would be released. All of these ideas fell through after this film received a ton of backlash over the female cast. The mediocre box office numbers only solidified things.
