PROJECT DETAILS:

Filming reportedly begins sometime this May. (2/23/24)

Sony has won the bidding war and will distribute the film theatrically. Cillian Murphy is back as executive producer and may have a role in the film, but things are kept quiet for now. Alex Garland and Danny Boyle scripts, with Danny directing. A sequel to this film is also part of the deal with Sony, with Alex Garland writing, but Danny won't be directing that one, so a director will be sought after at a later time. Each sequel is budgeted in the $60-million range. The deal was originally pitched as a potential new trilogy, but so far only two films have been officially announced, so a third entry may be dependent on the success of the films. (1/31/24)

This project is officially back from the dead and now in development as a possible new trilogy of films. Previous director Danny Boyle returns to helm, with Alex Garland also back as writer. At the moment Danny is only directing the first installment in the potential trilogy, while Alex will be writing all three films, which are budgeted at an estimated $75-million each. This project is reportedly going out to "studios, streamers and other potential buyers" later this week.  (1/10/24)

Actor Cillian Murphy revealed in an interview that he'd be happy to return if Garland and Boyle are involved, saying: "I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, “Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.” So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it." (7/11/23)

Writers Alex Garland and Danny Boyle had a recent interview where they offered an update on the project, which still seems to be on their radar despite so many years passing since the last installment. In the interview they revealed their latest idea on the project, with Garland saying the following: "A few years ago an idea materialized in my head for what would be really 28 Years Later. Danny [Boyle] always liked the idea." Danny added.. "So we’re talking about it quite seriously, quite diligently. If he doesn’t want to direct it himself I’ll be well up for it if we can execute a similarly good idea." (7/10/23)

Actor Cillian Murphy (who starred in the first) and director Danny Boyle had a recent interview to celebrate the first film's 20th anniversary, where they spoke briefly on this third project. Cillian was quoted saying: "...every time I do bump into Danny or Alex I always mention it. Because I showed it to my kids recently, some Halloween about four or five years ago, and they loved it. It really stands up, which is amazing for a film that’s 20 years old. So yeah, I love the idea and it’s very appealing to me." Danny also seems interested in possibly returning to direct, saying: "I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?" He adds... "It might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent." (11/3/22)

Original director Danny Boyle once again spoke briefly about the possibility of another film, adding to what was revealed last year, saying: "Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part. It's properly good. The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn't reference any of that. It doesn't feel stale at all. He's concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it's stood in abeyance really, but it's a you-never-know." (6/24/19)

It comes as no real surprise, but it looks as though the project isn't happening. 28 Days later writer Alex Garland had a recent Reddit AMA where he was asked if there were plans for another movie, in which he replied: "Kind of, but doubt it will ever happen." Apparently Alex and original director Danny Boyle had a sequel concept down, but nothing more aside from that and they've both moved on to other projects. It's possible one day this project will be revisited, but at the moment it is not in development. (2/12/18)

28 Days Later writer Alex Garland had an interview recently where he revealed that he came up with an idea for a sequel and brought it up to producer Andrew Macdonald and original director Danny Boyle. It appears as though the project is now in some form of active development, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Either way, here's what was said in the interview: "I had a funny idea. I had a sort of weird idea that popped into my head. Partly because of a trip I’d taken. I had this thought, and I suggested it to Andrew and Danny, but I also said I don’t want to work on it. I don’t really want to play a role, and Andrew said, ‘Leave it to me.’ So he’s gone off and is working on it." (5/12/15)

Danny Boyle had an interview recently where this project was briefly brought up. Here's what he had to say: "I don’t like zombie movies. I never did. We took a genre and fucked with it. Zombie aficionados, they’re quite precious with all their rules. Like with running: “They don’t do that!” Of course there are so many manifestations of zombies now, the rule book has gone out the window. I saw one episode of The Walking Dead, and it was very gripping. But the zombies were stumbling around again, which I hate. Given what we’ve just been talking about, it’s very difficult to know whether zombies are overexposed now as a concept. So it’s 40/60 whether [the movie] happens or not." (4/15/13)

Previously known as 28 Months Later.

A third entry was talked about around the release of 28 Weeks Later back in 2007.

It's said that this may be the first in a new trilogy.

This film would follow 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.
